Cooner Potter (p. 27) Dies of a Heart Attack Last Thursday, Cooney Potter died while preparing his fields for planting. Cooney was known throughout Spoon River as one of the hardest working farmers in the county, often working from sunrise to sunset (1). During his lifetime, he took the forty acres that he inherited from his father, (2) and through hard work and enterprise, heacquired more than 1,500 acres (3). His longtime friend and neighbor Squire Higbee commented: “He died from smoking Red Eagle cigars.” (4) However, an anonymous source close to the Potter family claimed that smoking wasn’t the only factor: “Eating hot pie and gulping coffee during the scorching hours of harvest time” (5) also had an adverse effect on Cooney’s health. He was just fifty-nine years old (6). He is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters. (7) (143 words) |
